Our flight emissions calculator asks you to input the origin and destination for any flights you want to offset. We then calculate the distance of each of these flights. By applying some standard factors for fuel consumption during airline flights provided by the World Resource Institute, we are able to convert your total flight miles into estimated carbon dioxide emissions.
Specific airline emissions data is provided by TRX Travel Analytics. Their methodology is explained in this blog post.
On a per person basis, private aviation has a far greater carbon footprint than commercial airline travel. For more information on balancing emissions from private aviation, contact aviation@terrapass.com or call (877) 270-1122.

For a variety of reasons, greenhouse gas emissions created high in the atmosphere are thought by scientists to be worse than greenhouse gas emissions at ground level. This is sometimes referred to as Radiative Forcing. Unfortunately, no consensus yet exists as to how much worse, so presently TerraPass doesn’t take this effect into account. We expect that a consensus will be reached in sometime in the near future, at which point we will update our calculations accordingly.
