About This Project

  • This project is located at the Ascend Performance Materials facility in Cantonment, FL. Nitric acid from Ascend’s facility is used to manufacture adipic acid for the polymer and food industries.
  • Industry air regulations allow certain levels of nitrous oxide (N2O) to be vented to the atmosphere. Nitrous oxide is a super-pollutant that is 273 times more powerful as a greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide (CO2).
  • This project involves the voluntary installation and operation of a secondary abatement catalyst in the ammonia oxidation reactor (AOR) where it destroys nitrous oxide (N2O) that would otherwise be vented to the atmosphere. The project also improves local air quality in addition to the greenhouse gas benefits.
  • The installation and operation of the secondary catalyst come at a significant cost to the facility. Competing nitric acid producers do not incur this same cost for nitrous oxide (N2O) destruction, so the Ascend facility relies on carbon credit sales to make this important greenhouse gas reduction process economically viable.

Sustainability Development Goals

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), also known as the Global Goals, are a set of 17 interconnected goals established by the United Nations in 2015 as a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all by 2030. The SDGs build upon the earlier Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) but are broader in scope, encompassing a wide range of economic, social, and environmental issues. They provide a comprehensive framework for addressing global challenges and achieving a more sustainable and equitable world. This project has the following sustainability development goals that are displayed.
