About This Project
- The Indian River County Landfill (IRCL), owned by the Indian River County (IRC) Solid Waste Disposal District (SWDD), has been in continuous operation since 1978. The site has never been required to operate a gas collection and control system (GCCS).
- SWDD voluntarily installed a gas collection and control system (GCCS) in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and control odors. The landfill has a gas collection and control system (GCCS) that is made up of vertical gas extraction wells and horizontal gas collectors. Blowers are used to extract the landfill gas (LFG) and destroy it in an LFG Specialties utility flare system.
- This ICVCM CCP-Approved Project reduces greenhouse gas emissions by capturing and destroying landfill methane, preventing it from leaking into the atmosphere. Methane is a super-pollutant that is 84 times more powerful as a greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide (CO2). Carbon credit sales provide the necessary funding for construction and ongoing operation of this project.
Sustainability Development Goals
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), also known as the Global Goals, are a set of 17 interconnected goals established by the United Nations in 2015 as a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all by 2030. The SDGs build upon the earlier Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) but are broader in scope, encompassing a wide range of economic, social, and environmental issues. They provide a comprehensive framework for addressing global challenges and achieving a more sustainable and equitable world. This project has the following sustainability development goals that are displayed.
