Tahuamanu Amazon REDD Project

Project TypeReduced Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation

What They DoThe Tahuamanu REDD+ Project is dedicated to preserving a significant portion of the Amazon rainforest, an area rich in biodiversity and crucial ecosystems. This project addresses the urgent threat of illegal deforestation driven primarily by small-scale agriculture, including maize and livestock production, due to the expansion of the religious community, Asociación Evangélica de la Misión Israelita del Nuevo Pacto Universal.

About This Project

The Tahuamanu REDD+ Project, situated in the heart of the Madre de Dios region of Peru, stands as a beacon of hope amidst the encroaching threats to the Amazon rainforest. Encompassing 172,584 hectares of lush lowland Amazonian expanse, this project serves as a stronghold for biodiversity and vital ecosystems. Despite its pristine beauty, this region faces a dire challenge in the form of rampant illegal deforestation. Small-scale agricultural activities, predominantly driven by the expansion efforts of the Asociación Evangélica de la Misión Israelita del Nuevo Pacto Universal, a religious community mandated to colonize lands for agricultural purposes. With limited oversight and economic alternatives for local communities, the unchecked deforestation has continued unabated, particularly along the Interoceanic Highway, transforming once-virgin lands into agricultural plots. The situation has reached a critical juncture, with deforestation escalating around the town of Iberia, emerging as a key hotspot.

Through rigorous spatial analysis and proactive measures, the project aims to thwart over 51,000 hectares of deforestation during its lifespan, averting the emission of more than 20 million tons of CO2e. Beyond mere numbers, the project is a lifeline for the diverse flora and fauna inhabiting this rich ecosystem. From majestic jaguars to elusive river wolves, this region teems with life, each species playing a vital role in maintaining the delicate balance of nature.

The project’s approach extends beyond mere preservation; it’s a holistic strategy aimed at addressing the root causes of deforestation. By bolstering forest governance through advanced monitoring techniques and on-ground assessments, supporting sustainable livelihood initiatives for local communities, forging partnerships with conservation authorities, and empowering communities through outreach and training, the project seeks to create change. In safeguarding the Tahuamanu Amazon, we not only protect a precious slice of biodiversity but also uphold our commitment to preserving the Amazon rainforest—one of the planet’s most invaluable natural treasures.

Sustainability Development Goals

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), also known as the Global Goals, are a set of 17 interconnected goals established by the United Nations in 2015 as a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all by 2030. The SDGs build upon the earlier Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) but are broader in scope, encompassing a wide range of economic, social, and environmental issues. They provide a comprehensive framework for addressing global challenges and achieving a more sustainable and equitable world. This project has the following sustainability development goals that are displayed.
