Did You Know Global Aviation Accounts for 2% of Man-Made Carbon Emissions? *

That means 915 million metric Tons of CO2e is emitted and offsetting it would be equivalent to:

Planting 15,129,603,671 Trees
Recycling 39,606,359,300 Bags of Waste
Switching 34,679,426,478 Incandescent Lamps to LEDs

Frequently Asked Questions

How do carbon offsets work?

Terrapass carbon offsets neutralize your carbon footprint by funding projects like reforestation, farm power and landfill gas capture, which all remove carbon emissions. Every 1,000 lbs you purchase destroys greenhouse gases equivalent to 1,000 lbs of carbon dioxide. That's like taking one car off the road for an entire month.

Where does my money go when I buy a Terrapass carbon offset?

When you buy carbon offsets from Terrapass your purchase is supporting emissions reduction projects in communities across the North America and the world. These projects include reforestation, renewable energy produced by wind power and methane capture at dairy farms, landfills, and abandoned coal mines. Carbon offsets help fund the development and operation of these projects. All Terrapass projects meet the highest standards for quality, monitoring, and independent verification. To learn more about the projects in our current portfolio please visit our projects page.

How does Terrapass ensure that its offset projects are really making a difference?

Terrapass ensures our offsets are making a difference in several ways. Prior to adding a project to our portfolio we perform due diligence to fully understand the impact of each project. Once the project is in our portfolio we monitor and verify all of the emissions reductions that are taking place. Finally all projects in our portfolio must pass the โ€œadditionalityโ€ test. Additionality refers to the concept of whether your carbon offset purchase really brings about carbon reductions, or whether the reductions would have happened anyway. If the purchase of carbon offsets is a critical factor in making the reductions happen, the reductions are said to be โ€œadditionalโ€ to the business-as-usual case. By verifying and checking at each step in the process we are committed to making sure our projects are clearing the air.

Do private aviation flights cause more pollution?

According to European non-governmental organization (NGO) Transport & Environment (T&E), private jets create more pollution five to 14 times more than commercial planes per passenger, and 50 times more than high-speed rail, emitting two tons of CO2 in a single hour. Source: Transport & Environment

How do I calculate how much I need to offset?

You can quickly calculate the amount of mT needed to offset your private aviation flight by using our conversion calculator on this page. First, select the fuel type that the jet uses. Second, enter in the number of gallons consumed for the flight. Once completed, the impact will display the amount of C02 that is needed to offset. Simply take that amount and enter it in the product quantity to cart.

What is the difference between Aviation Gas and Jet Fuel?

There are two commonly used fuel types: the first is AVGAS, also known as Aviation Gas, and the second is Jet Fuel. Choosing the right aviation fuel for your aircraft depends mainly on its engine type. AVGAS is used for piston-engine aircraft which these types of aircrafts can fly through the rotation of the propellers generating thrust. Jet Fuel is used for aircraft with turbine-engine jets.
