Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about your water footprint and BEF Water Restoration Certificates.

How do I know my water footprint?

The average person in the US is responsible for nearly 2,000 gallons of water a day, and only a small amount of that runs through our homes. Nearly 95 percent of your water footprint is hidden in the food you eat, the energy you use, the products you buy, and the services you rely on.

As much as we want to conserve water, we can’t avoid using it, so each of us has a water footprint. Terrapass recognizes how important water is to our daily lives and ecosystems, and how climate change affects freshwater resources.

That’s why we partner with the Bonneville Environmental Foundation (BEF) to raise awareness of stressed waterways and to offer BEF Water Restoration Certificates® (BEF WRCs®). Each certificate you buy funds restoration projects that return water to rivers, wetlands, and other freshwater ecosystems across North America, gallon for gallon.

How do water credit projects work?

Water credit projects work much like carbon credit projects. They direct funding toward initiatives that restore natural freshwater flows and ecosystems.

Water restoration project developers like BEF work with farmers, conservation groups, and local irrigation districts to identify restoration opportunities and manage the projects. Water restoration projects also meet additionality requirements, meaning that without funding from water credits, the projects would not happen.

Are BEF Water Restoration Certificates verified?

Yes. BEF Water Restoration Certificates are third party verified, tracked, and registered, so each gallon of restored water is counted once and can be traced back to a specific restoration project.

How does Terrapass ensure that its offset projects are really making a difference?

We check our projects at every stage. Before adding a project to our portfolio, we perform due diligence to fully understand its impact. Once a project is in our portfolio, its emission reductions are monitored and verified by accredited, independent third parties.

Every project must also pass the “additionality” test. Additionality asks whether your carbon offset purchase actually brings about reductions, or whether those reductions would have happened anyway. If carbon offset funding is a critical factor in making the reductions happen, they are considered “additional” to what would have happened under business as usual.
