Davis Landfill Gas Offset Project

Project TypeDavis Landfill Gas Offset Project

What They DoThis project captures and destroys methane emissions from the Davis County Landfill in Utah by using a gas collection system that converts landfill gas into energy, reducing greenhouse gases while relying on carbon credit funding to support its operation.

About This Project

  • Located at the Davis County Landfill in Layton, Utah, this project is owned by the Wasatch Integrated Waste Management District (WIWMD) and focuses on reducing emissions from landfill operations.
  • Captures and destroys methane before it escapes into the atmosphere, addressing a potent greenhouse gas that is 84 times more powerful than CO₂ over the short term. By preventing methane leakage, the project delivers significant and immediate climate benefits.
  • Uses a comprehensive gas collection and control system (GCCS), featuring a network of vertical and horizontal wells that collect landfill gas (LFG) and transport it through underground piping to a central blower station for processing.
  • Transforms waste emissions into usable energy by compressing and delivering collected LFG via pipeline to an off-site electricity generation plant, where it is destroyed through combustion in engines operated by Hill Air Force Base.
  • Ensures continuous emissions reduction through multiple destruction pathways, including three combustion engines, two enclosed flares for excess gas, and an additional CAT Power Generation Unit installed in March 2023 to expand capacity and efficiency.
  • Relies on carbon credit revenue to fund construction and operations, making it financially viable to capture and eliminate methane emissions while supporting long-term environmental performance.

Sustainability Development Goals

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), also known as the Global Goals, are a set of 17 interconnected goals established by the United Nations in 2015 as a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all by 2030. The SDGs build upon the earlier Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) but are broader in scope, encompassing a wide range of economic, social, and environmental issues. They provide a comprehensive framework for addressing global challenges and achieving a more sustainable and equitable world. This project has the following sustainability development goals that are displayed.
