Phlogiston Phase I Project

Project TypeNitric Acid N2O

What They DoThis project reduces powerful nitrous oxide emissions at an adipic acid facility in Cantonment, Florida by installing a NOx absorption system, improving local air quality while relying on carbon credit revenue to make the voluntary emissions reduction economically viable.

About This Project

  • Located at Ascend Performance Materials’ facility in Cantonment, Florida, this project targets emissions from adipic acid production—an essential ingredient used in polymers (like nylon) and food applications.
  • Addresses a powerful greenhouse gas often overlooked by regulation. While industry standards allow some nitrous oxide (N₂O) emissions, this project goes beyond compliance to tackle a pollutant that is 273 times more potent than CO₂ in driving climate change.
  • Implements advanced emissions reduction technology through the voluntary installation of a state-of-the-art NOx absorption column, designed specifically to capture and significantly reduce N₂O emissions at the source.
  • Represents the largest voluntary N₂O abatement initiative in North America, setting a new benchmark for climate leadership within the chemical manufacturing industry.
  • Improves local air quality alongside global climate impact, delivering meaningful environmental and public health benefits for the surrounding Cantonment community.
  • Bridges the economic gap of sustainability innovation. Because competitors are not required to install similar systems, carbon credit revenue plays a critical role in offsetting costs and enabling the long-term operation of this emissions reduction technology.

Sustainability Development Goals

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), also known as the Global Goals, are a set of 17 interconnected goals established by the United Nations in 2015 as a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all by 2030. The SDGs build upon the earlier Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) but are broader in scope, encompassing a wide range of economic, social, and environmental issues. They provide a comprehensive framework for addressing global challenges and achieving a more sustainable and equitable world. This project has the following sustainability development goals that are displayed.
